JW's and the Occult

Many occult symbols have been used by the Jehovah's witnesses since the early days of Charles Russell. He himself was involved in necromacy, pyramidology, astrology and spiritism.

Today his grave can be seen covered by a large triangular stone.

The Society has changed it's thoughts on some of these over the years but this again goes to show the inconsistencies withing the organisation.

Necromacy

After the death of Charles Russell these two statements, showing a belief in the ability of the dead to continue influencing the living, were printed in Society literature:-

Watch Tower 1917, November 1 p. 6161 [ WTS's reprints] Hence our dear Pastor, now in glory, is without doubt, manifesting a keen interest in the harvest work, and is permitted by the Lord to exercise some strong influence thereupon.

The Finished Mystery 1917 pp. 144, 256 This verse (Revelation 8:3) shows that, though Pastor Russell has passed beyond the veil, he is still managing every feature of the harvest work…We hold that he supervises, by the Lord's arrangement, the work yet to be done.

Joseph Rutherford later contardicted these statements by saying:-

Jehovah 1934 p. 191 No one of the temple company would be so foolish as to conclude that some brother (or brethren) at one time amongst them, and who has died and gone to heaven, is now instructing the saints on earth and directing them as to their work.

Then in 1989 they reverted back to the necromatic teaching:-

Revelation – Its Grand climax At Hand! 1989 p. 125 It is fitting, then, that one of the 24 elders, representing anointed ones already in heaven, should stir John's thinking…(Revelation 7:13, 14a) Yes, that elder could locate the answer and give it to John. This suggests that resurrected ones of the 24-elders group may be involved in the communicating of divine truths today.

Spiritism

Charles Russell said...
"A truth presented by Satan himself is just as true as a truth stated by God…Accept truth wherever you find it, no matter what it contradicts." (Zion's Watch Tower 1879 July pp. 8-9)

This clearly goes against the teachings of Scripture. The NWT clearly states in John 8:44:-

YOU are from YOUR father the Devil, and YOU wish to do the desires of YOUR father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of [the lie].

The Society has used the teachings of known spiritist Johannes Gerber and John S. Thompson. They particularily use these men to support their translation of John 1:1. They continued to use Gerber for 32 years after they were made aware of his spiritist connections.

Russell used the Egyptian Trinity Winged Sun-Disk on his books and tracts. This use of the Sun-Disk is similar to 33 degree Masonic Knights Templar
